KARACHI – Officials confirmed Tuesday that 10 additional inmates who escaped from Landhi Jail during an earthquake-induced jailbreak have voluntarily returned during the three-day Eid ul Adha holiday. The number of recaptured escapees now stands at 149 out of the 213 who fled during the incident.
The jailbreak occurred when prison authorities evacuated inmates into the open courtyard following tremors. The situation escalated as prisoners overpowered Frontier Corps personnel and escaped. Several security officials were injured, and one inmate died in the chaos, which also caused damage to the jail’s IT systems.
In response, a large-scale search operation involving police, Rangers, FC, SSU, and RRF led to the swift re-arrest of many escapees. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah removed top prison officials for negligence and ordered a full investigation into what has been called one of the most serious jailbreaks in years.
