Tando Jam Residents Protest Chronic Sewage Negligence, Threaten Escalation

Tando Jam (Reporter Munsif Ahmed Talpur) : Residents of Jam Bungalows, Tando Jam, staged a strong protest against the negligence and incompetence of the Public Health Department as well as the elected UC Chairman Naeem -Ul- Rehman of the Pakistan People’s Party. The protestors raised slogans and later addressed a joint press conference.

Speaking on the occasion, residents including Sarfaraz Shahani, Datar Dano Soomro, Nabi Bakhsh Kalwar, Abdul Rasheed Ujjan and others said that due to the Public Health Department’s negligence, the entire area remains submerged in sewage water. They further stated that the pumping station established in Jam Bungalows has also been lying non-functional. The residents complained that stagnant sewage water in the streets has made people vulnerable to skin diseases, stomach infections, and several epidemics. During the rainy season, it becomes impossible to drain out the water from houses, resulting in the destruction of valuable furniture and household items worth millions of rupees.

They revealed that they had donated land for the sewerage scheme and extended full cooperation, but even after more than five years, the project remains incomplete and stagnant. According to them, over sixty houses in the society are completely submerged whenever it rains. On the occasion, UC Chairman Naeem -Ul- Rehman Memon of PPP said that he had approached senior officials of the Public Health Department several times, but no action had been taken to resolve the issue.

He alleged that the department’s SDO is practically incapable of performing his duties, and whenever he is asked to take action, he makes excuses by claiming illness. Chairman Naeem Ul Rehman Memon warned the administration that if higher authorities failed to take immediate notice and resolve the issues, he would lead the people of his UC to the streets and launch a protest movement. He further said that the offices of
the concerned officials would also be besieged, and the entire responsibility of the situation would lie directly with the Public Health Department.
