Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called on the member states of the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) to enhance regional cooperation in response to mounting global and regional challenges, particularly climate change and geopolitical instability. Addressing the 17th ECO Summit held in Khankendi, Azerbaijan, he stressed the urgent need for coordinated efforts, noting that ECO countries are already facing severe environmental degradation, including melting glaciers, desertification, extreme weather events, and declining agricultural productivity.
Highlighting Pakistan’s vulnerability, PM Shehbaz recalled the catastrophic floods of 2022 that displaced over 33 million people, underscoring the critical importance of building resilience and sustainable development through deeper collaboration. He proposed the creation of low-emission corridors and a regional carbon market to boost climate finance cooperation among ECO members. The prime minister also expressed gratitude to ECO countries for naming Lahore the ECO Tourism Capital for 2027, inviting delegates to experience Pakistan’s vibrant cultural heritage.
On the geopolitical front, PM Shehbaz strongly condemned Israel’s recent strike on Iran, describing it as “unlawful, unjustified and uncalled for,” and extended condolences to the Iranian people. He also denounced the unprovoked Indian hostility towards Pakistan following the Pahalgam incident, calling it an attempt to destabilize regional peace. He appreciated the solidarity shown by ECO member states towards Pakistan in the wake of these tensions.
Furthermore, the prime minister condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, reaffirming Pakistan’s stance against barbaric acts targeting innocent civilians anywhere in the world, including Gaza, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), and Iran. PM Shehbaz’s address highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to peace, regional cooperation, and sustainable development amid growing environmental and political uncertainties.
