Karachi’s 9th Muharram Procession Proceeds Amid Tight Security

The central mourning procession of Muharram 9 in Karachi commenced from Nishtar Park on Saturday, moving towards Hussainiya Iraniyan Imambargah in Kharadar amid heightened security. Police confirmed the procession’s departure at 1:29 PM, with strict measures in place to ensure safety. Cellular services were temporarily suspended along the procession’s route and other smaller processions across the city, as per directives from Sindh’s Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Earlier this week, Karachi Traffic Police issued a comprehensive traffic plan for Muharram 8-10, detailing procession routes and alternative pathways for commuters. Authorities have implemented stringent security across Pakistan, including army deployments and crackdowns on sectarian content, ahead of Ashura (Muharram 10), which will be observed tomorrow. These measures aim to prevent unrest and ensure peaceful observances.

Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, along with Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab and Sindh IGP Ghulam Nabi Memon, inspected security preparations at various locations in the city. Lanjar directed law enforcement agencies to enforce foolproof security protocols. The officials also met with the organizers of the central procession to coordinate safety efforts.

On Friday, over 5,500 police personnel were deployed across Karachi to safeguard 8th Muharram processions. The extensive security presence reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining order during the sacred month. With Ashura approaching, authorities remain vigilant to prevent any disruptions and ensure peaceful commemorations.
