Sindh’s Energy Diversity Conference: Federal policies hinder development of energy sector: CM Murad Shah

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has declared the province Pakistan’s “energy basket,” citing its abundant coal, gas, wind, and solar resources. However, he criticized federal policies for creating obstacles in developing Sindh’s energy sector. Speaking at a conference organized by Energy Update and the Sindh Energy Department, Shah called for collaborative efforts to ensure sustainable energy solutions, emphasizing the need for energy security and affordability for all citizens.

The Chief Minister highlighted Sindh’s progress in utilizing Thar coal, which has already supplied 30 million tons to power plants, generating 31 gigawatts of electricity—enough for three million homes. He also announced a 105-kilometer railway project to connect Thar coal to international markets, calling it a transformative initiative. Additionally, Shah pointed out past challenges, including investor hesitancy and federal resistance to Sindh’s renewable energy projects, which delayed progress.

Sindh is leading Pakistan in renewable energy, with operational wind corridors and multiple solar projects aimed at reducing fossil fuel dependence. The provincial government has allocated Rs 2.5 billion for solar energy and provides free electricity (up to 200 units) to deserving Thar residents. Furthermore, the establishment of the Sindh Transmission and Dispatch Company (STDC) and the Sindh Electric Power Regulatory Authority (SEPRA) marks a major step toward energy autonomy and improved regulatory oversight.

Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah reiterated Sindh’s commitment to green energy, mentioning upcoming solar parks in Karachi, Manjhand, Sukkur, and Larkana. He noted that industries are increasingly adopting renewable energy, while free solar systems are being distributed province-wide. The conference concluded with a call for stronger federal-provincial cooperation to overcome policy barriers and fully harness Pakistan’s energy potential, ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future.
