Five Terrorists Killed, Hangu DPO Injured in Intense Gunfight During Counterterrorism Operation

A fierce exchange of gunfire took place between security forces and militants in the Shinawari Zargari area of Hangu district, culminating in the deaths of five terrorists during a well-coordinated anti-terror operation. The operation, led by District Police Officer Muhammad Khalid, targeted militants affiliated with the Indian-backed proxy group “Fitna Al-Hindustan.” During the intense encounter, DPO Khalid sustained three gunshot wounds and was swiftly moved to Peshawar for advanced medical treatment. The Deputy Superintendent of Police confirmed his condition as stable and out of danger.

Inspector General Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Zulfiqar Hameed told reporters that several other militants were also injured in the clash and praised the police force’s determination to persist with targeted operations against terrorists throughout the province. IG Hameed highlighted that DPO Khalid’s morale remains high despite his injuries, underscoring his commitment to the ongoing fight against extremism.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi personally conveyed his commendation to DPO Khalid in a phone call, lauding the bravery and leadership exemplified by the Hangu Police team. He described the elimination of the five terrorists as a significant blow to terrorism and prayed for the swift recovery of both DPO Khalid and SHO Nabi Khan, who was also injured during the operation.

The incident reflects a broader pattern of escalating militant violence in Pakistan’s northwestern provinces amid regional instability. Data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies reveals a 5% rise in militant attacks in May 2025, with notable increases in casualties, particularly among security forces and civilians. Despite these challenges, the Pakistani police and military continue resolute campaigns to curb terrorist threats and safeguard public security.
