Cambodia has urged Thailand to agree to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, according to a report by AFP on Friday. The country’s ambassador to the United Nations, Chhea Keo, made the appeal following a closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council, which was attended by representatives from both nations. Keo emphasized Cambodia’s commitment to resolving the dispute peacefully, stating, “Cambodia asked for an immediate ceasefire—unconditionally—and we also call for the peaceful solution of the dispute.”
The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia escalated on Friday as heavy artillery exchanges continued for a second consecutive day. The fighting intensified and spread across the disputed region, raising concerns of further instability. Despite the ongoing clashes, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen claimed that Thailand had initially accepted a ceasefire proposal mediated by Malaysia but later withdrew its agreement.
The situation remains tense as diplomatic efforts continue to seek a resolution. The international community is closely monitoring the conflict, with hopes that both sides will return to negotiations to prevent further escalation. The UN Security Council’s involvement underscores the urgency of de-escalating hostilities and finding a lasting solution to the border dispute.
