The Colorado Avalanche and San Jose Sharks completed a one-for-one forward trade on Friday, with 22-year-old Russian winger Danil Gushchin heading to Colorado in exchange for 21-year-old Swedish prospect Oskar Olausson.
Gushchin, a 2020 third-round pick by San Jose, showed promise during his limited NHL action, recording 2 goals and 5 points in 18 games over two seasons. The skilled winger dominated at the AHL level last season, potting 28 goals and 51 points in just 56 games for the San Jose Barracuda. His goal total ranked second on the team and established a new career high.
In return, the Sharks acquire Olausson, Colorado’s 2021 first-round selection (28th overall). The 6’1″ forward has seen minimal NHL action (4 games) but brings size and scoring potential after posting 14 goals and 32 points in 62 AHL games last season. The trade represents a classic “change of scenery” deal for both young players as their former organizations look to fill different roster needs.
