PIMA Launches Nationwide Hepatitis Awareness Campaign Ahead of World Hepatitis Day

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) has launched a comprehensive hepatitis awareness campaign to mark World Hepatitis Day on July 28, 2025. The initiative aims to promote prevention, early diagnosis, and effective treatment through seminars, walks, free screening camps, and continuing medical education (CME) programs across the country.

On Saturday, PIMA Islamabad, in collaboration with the National Press Club, organized a free medical camp offering Hepatitis B and C screenings, vaccinations, specialist consultations, and essential lab tests. Prof. Dr. Atif Hafeez Siddiqui, PIMA’s Central President, highlighted that contaminated syringes and unsafe injections are the primary causes of hepatitis transmission in Pakistan. He warned that nearly 90% of infected individuals remain unaware of their condition, stressing that testing is crucial for timely intervention.

Dr. Siddiqui explained that Hepatitis A and E spread through contaminated water and food, while Hepatitis B, C, and D are transmitted via infected needles, surgical tools, and unsafe blood transfusions. He emphasized that early detection and treatment of Hepatitis B, C, and D can prevent severe complications, including liver cancer, and save lives.

PIMA’s campaign underscores the urgent need for public education and improved healthcare practices to combat hepatitis. With millions at risk, the association calls for stricter regulations on medical equipment sterilization and increased access to testing and vaccination to curb the spread of this preventable yet deadly disease.
