NDMA Warns of Floods and Landslides in GB & AJK as Monsoon Rains Loom

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning for possible floods and landslides in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) as heavy monsoon rains are expected from July 28 to 31. The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) stated that regions like Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Shigar, Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, and Bagh are at risk of flooding, while hilly areas may face landslides due to intense rainfall.

In Chitral Valley, melting glaciers combined with rain could increase water flow in the Chitral River, raising flood risks. Additionally, urban flooding is likely in Muzaffarabad and Bagh due to heavy downpours. The NDMA has instructed local authorities, Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs), and rescue teams to remain on high alert and ensure emergency preparedness.

The warning comes as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicts heavy rainfall from July 29-31, which may trigger flash floods in Kabul River tributaries. The country has already suffered severe monsoon impacts, with 279 deaths and 676 injuries reported so far. Punjab remains the worst affected, with 151 fatalities and 536 injuries, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (64 deaths) and Sindh (25 deaths).

The devastation extends beyond human casualties, with 1,553 homes damaged, families displaced, and 374 livestock lost. As rains continue, the threat of further destruction looms, emphasizing the need for urgent disaster response and public awareness. Authorities urge residents in high-risk zones to take precautions and follow official advisories.
