Prendergast Stars as Ireland Edge Pakistan in Thrilling T20I Opener

Orla Prendergast delivered a match-winning all-round performance to guide Ireland to an 11-run victory over Pakistan in the first T20I at Clontarf Cricket Club on Wednesday. The Irish all-rounder struck a crucial 29 off 26 balls before claiming 3/28 with the ball, helping her team defend a modest total of 142. Pakistan, in reply, faltered in their chase, finishing at 131/9 despite a valiant 39 off 23 balls from Natalia Pervaiz.

Ireland’s innings got off to a shaky start after captain Gaby Lewis fell for just 1, but Prendergast and Amy Hunter (37 off 30) steadied the ship with a 45-run partnership. Leah Paul’s quickfire 29 off 18 provided late momentum, but Pakistan’s bowlers—led by skipper Fatima Sana (4/26)—triggered a collapse, restricting Ireland to 142 all out with two balls remaining.

Pakistan’s chase never found consistency as Ireland’s bowlers applied relentless pressure. Pervaiz and Rameen Shamim (27 off 20) kept hopes alive, but Prendergast’s three-wicket haul, supported by Jane Maguire (2 wickets), derailed the innings. Only four Pakistani batters reached double figures as the visitors fell short, managing just 131/9 in their 20 overs.

The win gives Ireland a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and extends their unbeaten T20I streak to eight games. The second T20I, scheduled for Friday, promises another intense battle as Pakistan look to bounce back while Ireland aim to seal the series early.
