Eintracht Frankfurt Sign Japanese Winger Ritsu Doan in Major Bundesliga Move

Eintracht Frankfurt have bolstered their attacking options with the signing of Japan international Ritsu Doan from Bundesliga rivals Freiburg on a five-year contract running until 2030. The 27-year-old winger, who has 57 caps for Japan, joins Frankfurt after an impressive three-year spell at Freiburg, where he contributed 26 goals and 23 assists in 123 appearances.

Doan’s arrival comes as Frankfurt prepare for Champions League football following their third-place finish in the Bundesliga last season. The club’s sporting director, Markus Krösche, praised the signing, stating: “Ritsu has proven his quality in the Bundesliga and brings exactly the skills we need to achieve our ambitions. His technique, speed, and mentality stood out at Freiburg, and his international experience with Japan is invaluable.”

Before his time in Germany, Doan honed his skills in the Eredivisie, spending four seasons with Groningen and PSV Eindhoven, where he developed into one of Asia’s most exciting wingers. Known for his dribbling, creativity, and work rate, Doan is expected to slot straight into Frankfurt’s attack as they aim to compete on multiple fronts this season.

The transfer marks another step in Frankfurt’s strategy of blending youth and experience under manager Dino Toppmöller. With Doan’s versatility—capable of playing on either flank or as a second striker—the Eagles add another dynamic threat to their frontline alongside the likes of Omar Marmoush and Ansgar Knauff.

Freiburg, meanwhile, will need to replace Doan’s productivity as they look to build on their own top-half finishes in recent years. For Frankfurt, the signing reinforces their ambition to establish themselves among Germany’s elite while making an impact in Europe. Doan could make his debut in Frankfurt’s upcoming pre-season fixtures ahead of their Bundesliga opener in August.
