Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has intensified his allegations against the BJP and Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing them of orchestrating a “huge criminal fraud” in the 2024 general elections. In a video statement on Friday, the Congress leader described the purported manipulation as an act of “treason” against India’s democracy and constitution, warning that those responsible would face consequences.
Gandhi referenced a Karnataka-based survey that reportedly uncovered six key electoral malpractices, including duplicate voter registrations, fake addresses, and misuse of Form 6 for enrolling first-time voters. He also accused the ECI of deliberately delaying assembly elections in certain states to benefit the BJP and refusing to provide digital voter rolls for scrutiny.
The Election Commission issued a sharp rebuttal, dismissing Gandhi’s claims as “absurd” and challenging him to submit a sworn affidavit supporting his allegations. Sources within the poll body stated that if Gandhi fails to provide legal proof, he should publicly apologize for misleading the nation. The BJP has also dismissed the accusations as desperate opposition rhetoric.
The controversy has further polarized India’s political landscape, with the INDIA alliance backing Gandhi’s claims while the BJP labels them as baseless conspiracy theories. Legal experts suggest that without substantial evidence, these allegations may remain a political talking point rather than a judicial matter. As the war of words escalates, the debate over electoral integrity continues to dominate national discourse.
