Australian cricket star Glenn Maxwell has called time on his One Day International (ODI) career, effective immediately, while confirming he will remain available for T20 Internationals. The 36-year-old all-rounder made the emotional announcement during an appearance on The Final Word Podcast, citing his body’s struggles to cope with the demands of 50-over cricket following his gruesome leg injury in 2022.
Maxwell, a key member of Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup-winning squad, revealed he didn’t want to “selfishly” block younger players from developing ahead of the 2027 World Cup. “I felt like I was letting the team down with how my body was reacting,” he admitted, after consulting with selector George Bailey.
While not officially retiring from Test cricket, a red-ball return appears unlikely. His decision follows Steve Smith’s recent ODI retirement and Australia’s Champions Trophy semi-final exit. Maxwell ends his ODI career with 128 matches, 3,499 runs, and a reputation as one of the most explosive match-winners in white-ball history.
