Bowling for Bonds: ASEAN Diplomats and Pakistani Officials Forge Ties on the Lanes

The Consulate General of Malaysia in Karachi successfully hosted the third ASEAN Friendship Bowling Tournament on August 24, 2025, at the Royal Rodale in DHA. The annual event, held in commemoration of ASEAN Day, served as a vibrant platform for cultural diplomacy and people-to-people engagement. Marking a significant step in ASEAN-Pakistan relations, this year’s tournament featured, for the first time, a team from Pakistan’s Foreign Affairs Liaison Office (FALO) in Karachi, symbolizing a growing spirit of cooperation.

The tournament was inaugurated by Mr. Irfan Soomro, Director General of FALO Karachi, who served as the Special Guest and participated as a player. Teams from the Consulates of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and FALO competed in a day of spirited and friendly competition. Winners across team, men’s, and women’s categories were honored with trophies and prizes in a celebratory ceremony, which also featured the presentation of a special Golden Egg Prize.

Malaysian Consul General H.E. Herman Hardynata Ahmad set the tone for the event, stating that the tournament was “more than a sporting competition” but a reflection of “ASEAN’s unity in diversity.” He emphasized that by including FALO, the event reaffirmed ASEAN’s commitment to building closer ties with Pakistan through “friendship, goodwill and shared experiences.”

The event concluded with a lunch reception where appreciation plaques were presented to ASEAN colleagues, FALO representatives, and partners for their contributions. The tournament successfully underscored ASEAN’s enduring unity while significantly reinforcing its valued and expanding diplomatic and people-to-people partnership with Pakistan.
