LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday ordered Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s nephew, Shahrez Khan, to be sent to jail on judicial remand. He is facing charges related to the attack on Jinnah House, the residence of the Lahore Corps Commander, during the violent riots that erupted on May 9, 2023.
Shahrez, the son of Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan, was initially arrested on August 21. The Lahore police presented him before ATC Judge Manzer Ali Gill upon the completion of his physical remand. During the hearing, the prosecution requested an extension of his physical custody for further investigation. However, Judge Gill rejected the plea and instead ordered him to be placed in judicial remand.
The case against Shahrez and his brother, Shershah Khan, is part of the broader legal proceedings concerning the May 9 violence. The riots, triggered by the arrest of the PTI founder in a corruption case, involved widespread attacks on military and state installations across the country. The assault on Jinnah House stands out as one of the most significant incidents of that day.
According to sources, both brothers are accused of allegedly running an anti-state campaign and having involvement in the May 9 violence. Shershah Khan was reportedly present at the scene of the Jinnah House attack and faces specific charges of arson, vandalism, and torching a police van. It is alleged that he fled to London following the incidents and remained there for nearly two years before recent developments in the case.
