The Sindh government has launched a large-scale evacuation drive, successfully relocating more than 94,000 residents from katcha (riverine) areas as a crucial precautionary measure against anticipated flooding. Provincial Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced on Thursday that the initiative was launched to protect vulnerable communities and prevent any loss of life. Commissioners, deputy commissioners, and other administrative officials are personally supervising these critical field operations across the province.
Beyond the human cost, the minister highlighted the significant threat to agriculture and livelihoods, revealing that approximately 2.454 million livestock are currently at risk. In response to this, the provincial machinery has managed to safely shift around 328,473 animals to more secure areas. Furthermore, in an effort to prevent disease outbreaks among the displaced cattle, over 600,000 animals have been vaccinated.
The administration is on high alert, with machinery deployed at all critical points. Chief Minister Sindh is personally monitoring the evolving situation. The urgency of the operations has been heightened after India released an additional 500,000 cusecs of water, raising serious concerns about exacerbated flooding conditions in the region.
Minister Memon stressed that saving precious lives remains the government’s absolute top priority, assuring that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure public safety. In a related development, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari is visiting Punjab to meet with families already affected by the floods, underscoring the widespread nature of the seasonal challenge.
