Punjab Launches Historic Relief Operation as Floods Claim 56 Lives, Affect 4.2 Million

Punjab’s Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has disclosed that the recent catastrophic floods have resulted in the deaths of 56 people and have impacted the lives of over 4.2 million citizens across the province. Providing a detailed breakdown of the devastation, she stated that a total of 4,155 villages have been affected, with crops on a staggering 1.496 million acres of agricultural land completely destroyed. Minister Aurangzeb emphasized that the ongoing rescue and relief operation is the most extensive ever undertaken in Punjab’s history.

The minister provided a river-wise analysis of the submerged villages, noting that 1,957 villages along the Chenab River, 1,477 along the Ravi River, 625 along the Sutlej River, and 96 near the Indus River have been flooded, leaving 244,000 people in severe distress. In response, authorities have undertaken a massive evacuation, relocating more than 2.2 million people to safer areas and rescuing 1.6 million livestock from the floodwaters.

The comprehensive relief efforts include the deployment of over 1,000 field hospitals and mobile clinics, which include specialized mother and child health vans to address medical needs. Furthermore, more than 500 veterinary medical camps have been established to treat injured and rescued animals. The provincial government is also ensuring the distribution of food, clean drinking water, and medicines, while conducting regular disinfection and anti-epidemic sprays to mitigate the risk of disease outbreaks in the affected regions.
