Sindh on High Alert as Raging Flood Wave from Punjab Threatens Key Barrages

A devastating flood wave, having wreaked havoc across Punjab, has now surged into Sindh, posing a severe threat to the province’s critical barrages and prompting a major emergency response. According to official data, an extremely high-level flood has been recorded at Head Panjnad, where the water flow has increased dramatically. The Panjnad Barrage is currently managing an immense inflow and outflow of 446,820 cusecs.

The situation across Sindh’s river system is dire. The Sindh Information Department reported that the inflow at the mighty Guddu Barrage is 366,151 cusecs, while the Sukkur Barrage is seeing an inflow of 329,990 cusecs. Further south, the Kotri Barrage has an inflow of 245,000 cusecs. The Trimmu Barrage has experienced one of the most sharp rises, with a surge of 112,576 cusecs in just 12 hours, leading to a current inflow and outflow of 488,169 cusecs.

The human cost of the advancing floodwaters is already becoming clear. The Chenab River is in high flood near Liaquatpur, and a breach occurred with the collapse of the Zamindara embankment near Noorwala. This failure sent floodwaters into homes and schools, submerging nearby agricultural land and crops. Local sources report that numerous residents have become trapped in their homes due to the rapidly rising water levels, and emergency rescue operations are currently in progress to evacuate them to safety.
