Light Showers Drizzle on Karachi for Fourth Day as City Recovers from Flooding

Karachi experienced a fourth consecutive day of rainfall on Thursday as light to moderate morning showers fell across several parts of the city, including MA Jinnah Road, II Chundrigar Road, Clifton, University Road, and Gulistan-e-Jauhar. These showers came in the aftermath of three days of torrential downpours from September 8 to 10 that caused widespread urban flooding, infrastructure damage, and multiple fatalities, leaving large swathes of the city submerged and hundreds of residents displaced.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the monsoon system has weakened significantly and turned into a low-pressure area that has moved away from the city’s coast. The Met Office forecasts light rain and drizzle to continue over the next 24 hours with partly cloudy and humid conditions, ruling out chances of another intense spell of downpours. The depression over the North Arabian Sea has shifted westwards and is now located approximately 110 kilometres east-southeast of Pasni.

The previous three days of heavy rainfall caused the Lyari and Malir rivers along with several other streams to overflow, inundating low-lying neighborhoods and prompting emergency rescue operations. Rescue teams including Rescue 1122, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), and the Pakistan Army evacuated more than 350 people from flood-affected zones. The city reported multiple deaths from drowning in the overflowing Gadap River, with search operations for the missing continuing.

Rainfall data released by the Met Office shows Surjani Town received the highest precipitation at 143.8 millimetres during September 8-10, followed by Gulshan-e-Maymar (109.8mm), Gulshan-e-Hadeed (92mm), Korangi (92mm), North Karachi (81.6mm), and DHA (74.5mm). While major thoroughfares like Sharea Faisal, the M-9 Motorway, and Lyari Expressway have been cleared of water and reopened for traffic, several residential localities remain waterlogged as the city begins its recovery process from the extensive flooding.
