ISLAMABAD: A high-level Pakistani parliamentary delegation, led by former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, has engaged with US lawmakers to present Pakistan’s stance following recent military escalations with India. The delegation, which includes prominent figures such as Hina Rabbani Khar, Sherry Rehman, and Jalil Abbas Jilani, held key discussions on Capitol Hill, emphasizing India’s aggressive posturing and its refusal to engage in dialogue.
The diplomatic efforts come after a brief but intense armed conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, triggered by the Pahalgam incident in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The clashes, which saw Pakistan down six Indian fighter jets and dozens of drones, ended on May 10 with a US-brokered ceasefire.
During meetings with US Senator Chris Van Hollen and Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Bilawal highlighted India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) as a violation of international law, threatening the livelihoods of millions. He also criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s escalation policies, warning that unprovoked aggression risks destabilizing South Asia.
While reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to peace, Bilawal acknowledged the US role in de-escalation and called for sustained dialogue to resolve disputes, particularly Kashmir.
