Diane Keaton, the Oscar-winning actor celebrated for her role in Annie Hall and her performance in The Godfather trilogy, has passed away at the age of 79, People magazine reported on Saturday.
Specific details surrounding her death were not immediately available. A family spokesperson informed People that Keaton’s loved ones have requested privacy, confirming the actor died in California.
Keaton was a longtime artistic partner of director Woody Allen, most famously playing the title role in Annie Hall as the endearing love interest of Allen’s character, Alvy Singer. The 1977 film also won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, solidifying Keaton’s status as a leading actress and a unique fashion icon.
Her collaborative work with Allen spanned eight films, which included 1979’s Manhattan.
A recipient of BAFTA and Golden Globe awards, Keaton earned three additional Academy Award nominations for Best Actress for her work in Reds, Marvin’s Room, and Something’s Gotta Give.
In The Godfather series, she portrayed Kay Adams, the girlfriend and later wife of Michael Corleone, played by Al Pacino.
Born Diane Hall on January 5, 1946, in Los Angeles, Keaton had romantic relationships with Allen, Pacino, and Warren Beatty but never married. She is survived by her two children, Dexter and Duke.
