ATC Remands Sindh Minister’s Brother in Custody Over Assault on Official

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Karachi has remanded Farhan Ghani, the Chairman of Chanesar Town and younger brother of Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani, into police custody until August 28. The remand is connected to a case involving the alleged assault of a government official, Hafiz Sohail. The incident led to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) at the Ferozabad police station.

According to the complaint, the alleged assault took place on August 22 while Hafiz Sohail was supervising fibre cable work on a service road off Sharae Faisal. The FIR includes serious charges of attempted murder and terrorism against Farhan Ghani and five of his associates. Following the registration of the case, Ghani surrendered to the police, who subsequently produced him and the other accused before the ATC at Karachi Central Jail.

During the court proceedings, the Investigating Officer (IO) presented the prosecution’s case, stating that the accused had assaulted the government official despite the work being conducted under police security. The prosecution requested a 14-day physical remand to conduct further investigations. In his defense, Farhan Ghani categorically denied the charges of assault.

Ghani claimed his actions were within his official capacity as Town Chairman, explaining that he had only questioned the crew about their permission to dig up the road and asked them to stop when they could not produce a No Objection Certificate (NOC). After hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted police physical remand until August 28 and instructed them to present a progress report and the accused at the next hearing.
