Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during his official visit to Pakistan, concluded a comprehensive series of high-level meetings aimed at reinforcing the all-weather strategic partnership between the two nations. In a significant engagement, FM Wang Yi met with Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir in Islamabad. According to a statement from the military’s media wing, their discussions focused on critical issues of regional security, counter-terrorism, and matters of mutual interest. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their strategic partnership and enhancing coordination in regional and international forums.
The meeting with military leadership was preceded by extensive dialogues with Pakistan’s civilian government. FM Wang Yi held meetings with the President, Prime Minister, and engaged in a strategic dialogue with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. These talks covered the entire spectrum of bilateral relations, where both nations reiterated their unwavering commitment to the high-quality development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), often referred to as CPEC 2.0.
A key outcome of the strategic dialogue was the mutual agreement to upgrade CPEC into a multi-faceted corridor. Chinese FM Wang Yi described CPEC as the cornerstone of the bilateral relationship and outlined the vision to develop it into “a growth corridor, livelihood-enhancing corridor, green corridor, and open corridor”. Specific projects discussed included deepening cooperation in industry, agriculture, and mining, supporting the Gwadar Port, advancing the KKH realignment project, and welcoming third-party participation in the major ML-1 railway project.
The visit concluded with a strong shared commitment to advance peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. FM Wang Yi consistently reiterated China’s steadfast support for Pakistan’s sovereignty and economic development, which was met with gratitude from Pakistani officials. The unanimity on all major bilateral, regional, and global matters demonstrated the depth and resilience of the iron-clad friendship between Pakistan and China.
