The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) conducted a successful intelligence-based operation in Barikot, Swat, killing three militants linked to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). A CTD spokesperson confirmed the operation on Saturday, identifying the slain terrorists as Ajmal (alias Waqas), Mutiullah (alias Junaid), and Rahimullah. The raid was launched after authorities received credible intelligence about their presence in the area.
Notorious Militants Neutralized
Ajmal, who carried a Rs2 million bounty, was wanted in nine terrorism cases, including murder and extortion. Mutiullah was accused in two terror cases and was involved in the targeted killings of individuals assisting law enforcement. Rahimullah, also wanted in two cases, allegedly facilitated militant activities through logistics and targeted attacks. All three were implicated in IED attacks on security forces and assaults on police infrastructure in Swat.
Security Situation in Pakistan
The operation comes amid ongoing militant violence in the country. According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), June saw 78 terrorist attacks, resulting in 100 deaths—including 53 security personnel and 39 civilians. While this marks an 8% decrease in attacks compared to May, the toll remains high, with 189 injured, mostly security forces and civilians.
Mixed Trends in Militant Violence
Despite the slight decline in attacks and a 12% drop in fatalities, injuries saw a marginal increase. Overall, June’s violence claimed 175 lives, including 55 security personnel, 77 militants, and 41 civilians. The CTD’s latest operation underscores the persistent threat of terrorism while highlighting the effectiveness of targeted counter-terrorism efforts. Authorities remain on high alert to prevent further destabilization in the region.
