Russian forces launched a massive overnight drone and missile attack on Kyiv and surrounding areas, killing seven people and injuring dozens, Ukrainian officials reported Monday. The assault destroyed part of a residential high-rise in the Shevchenkivskyi district, where six victims died, including four children among 25 wounded. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, condemned the strikes, stating, “The Russians’ style is unchanged – to hit where there may be people.”
The attacks damaged six of Kyiv’s 10 districts, sparking fires and collapsing structures. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko warned that civilians might still be trapped under rubble. A 75-year-old survivor, Liudmyla, described the horror: “You’re frozen, looking at all of it and thinking about how you will live.” The strikes also damaged a metro station entrance—a critical bomb shelter—and a nearby bus stop, disrupting safe havens for residents.
Ukraine’s air force claimed success in intercepting 339 of 352 drones and 15 of 16 missiles, but the barrage still caused widespread destruction. The Kyiv Polytechnic Institute reported damage to its sports complex, academic buildings, and dormitories. In the broader Kyiv region, a 68-year-old woman was killed, and at least eight others were injured. The assault follows last week’s deadly attack, where Russian drones killed 28 people and wounded over 150.
President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed to address defense needs and increased pressure on Russia during his upcoming UK visit. Moscow has not commented on the latest strikes but denies targeting civilians—despite thousands of Ukrainian civilian deaths since the 2022 invasion. As rescue teams work amid smoldering ruins, the attacks underscore the ongoing brutality of the war and Ukraine’s urgent need for international support.
