E-Commerce Experts Reject 18% Tax, Demand Immediate Withdrawal

Lahore: E-commerce experts and digital community leaders have strongly opposed the proposed 18% tax on the sector, calling for its immediate reversal. During a press conference at the Lahore Press Club, representatives of the digital community expressed serious concerns over the government’s taxation policy on e-commerce.

They warned that such measures are a major threat to the growth of the e-commerce industry and could put the livelihoods of millions at risk if not withdrawn. The representatives stated that instead of supporting digital businesses, government policies are becoming a significant hurdle in their development.

Saqib Azhar, a leading expert in the e-commerce industry, shared that he has been part of the sector for over 15 years and has witnessed repeated obstacles placed in its path. He criticized the lack of a dedicated ministry for e-commerce, highlighting the industry’s consistent progress despite these challenges.

Azhar further noted that e-commerce is one of the fastest-growing industries in Pakistan, with an annual growth rate of 17%. However, the imposition of an 18% tax threatens to derail this momentum, potentially stalling the digital economy’s progress and discouraging entrepreneurs.
