Pakistan’s plan to launch a ferry service between Gwadar Port and Gulf countries has gained momentum, with five private-sector operators submitting formal proposals. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs held a high-level meeting, chaired by Federal Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, to evaluate technical, financial, and operational plans for the project. The proposed ferry routes are expected to provide an affordable and efficient alternative for passenger travel and cargo transport, enhancing Pakistan’s regional trade integration.
Strategic & Economic Benefits
Minister Chaudhry highlighted the strategic importance of the ferry service, stating it would reduce transportation costs, boost maritime activity, and position Gwadar as a central hub in global trade networks. “This initiative will improve connectivity with Gulf states and drive long-term economic growth,” he said. Authorities were instructed to conduct detailed evaluations of the proposals, ensuring all regulatory and logistical aspects are addressed before launch.
Balochistan Government’s Full Support
Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, who joined the meeting virtually, assured full provincial cooperation for the ferry project. He emphasized that the Gwadar-Oman route would particularly benefit pilgrims and local travelers. Bugti also reaffirmed commitments to youth empowerment, mentioning plans to train 30,000 young Pakistanis through the Pak-China Technical and Vocational Center for overseas employment.
Gwadar’s Future as a Maritime Hub
The ferry service is seen as a milestone in regional connectivity and a catalyst for Gwadar’s development. With private sector interest growing and government backing secured, the project could transform Pakistan’s maritime economy. Will this be the breakthrough that finally unlocks Gwadar’s full potential? The coming months will be crucial.
