Heavy Rains Batter Rawalpindi and Islamabad, More Expected This Week

A severe rainstorm swept through Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Tuesday, delivering over 65mm of rainfall and providing respite from the recent heatwave. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported significant precipitation across the twin cities, with Rawalpindi’s Bokra area recording 64mm, Shamsabad 54mm, and Islamabad’s Saidpur 52mm. The showers brought cooler temperatures but also raised flood risks in low-lying zones.

In response to the downpour, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) activated emergency protocols, dispatching teams to vulnerable areas to manage water accumulation. Nullah Lai’s water levels surged to 10 feet at Katarian, prompting concerns about urban flooding. The PMD has forecast additional rainfall in the coming days, advising residents to exercise caution.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) announced the official start of Punjab’s monsoon season, with the first spell expected to last until July 1. Heavy rains and strong winds are anticipated in Murree, Galiat, Attock, and parts of South Punjab, including Multan and Bahawalpur. Similar weather was reported in Azad Kashmir’s Kotli region.

Authorities have warned citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated on weather alerts. With more rain predicted, emergency services remain on standby to address potential flooding and drainage issues. The PMD continues to monitor the situation closely, urging preparedness for further adverse conditions.
