Honoring Our Heroes: A Nation Pays Tribute on Defence & Martyrs Day

Pakistan’s top civilian and military leadership paid solemn homage to the nation’s martyrs, war veterans, and resilient citizens on the 60th Defence and Martyrs’ Day, which this year coincided with Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH). The day began with a 31-gun salute in the federal capital, setting a tone of reverence and national pride. The ceremony was led by Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, alongside the heads of the air force, navy, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, who collectively honored the heroes who safeguard the nation’s sovereignty.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), in its message, stated that September 6th epitomizes the unshakeable spirit and resolve of the Pakistani nation. It recalled how the country’s brave soldiers, supported by a united public, had historically thwarted a numerically superior enemy, leaving an indelible message that a united nation can never be defeated. The armed forces reaffirmed their resolve to defend the country against any threat and to provide all-out support to the victims of the ongoing floods across Pakistan.

President Asif Ali Zardari termed the day a “glorious chapter” in history, praising the professional excellence and multi-domain capabilities of the military. He linked the historic valour of 1965 to the recent success of Operation “Bunyan-um-Marsoos,” stating that the nation’s defence remains impregnable. As Supreme Commander, he committed to modernizing the military to counter hybrid warfare and disinformation, while also reaffirming Pakistan’s principled stance on Kashmir and Palestine, condemning Israeli actions as genocide.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also lauded the armed forces, calling September 6th a symbol of courage and unity. He highlighted the success of the recent operation under the leadership of COAS Field Marshal Munir and warned against ignoring continuous Indian provocations. The Prime Minister stressed that economic stability is essential for a strong defence and urged the nation to rise above differences for sustainable prosperity, concluding with a pledge to work for a secure, united, and prosperous Pakistan.
