The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Monday the appointment of Sanjog Gupta as its new Chief Executive Officer. Gupta, who previously served as the CEO of Sports and Live Experiences at Indian broadcaster JioStar, will succeed Geoff Allardice, who stepped down in January after a four-year tenure.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah welcomed Gupta, highlighting his “extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialization” as a key asset for the organization. The selection process was highly competitive, with over 2,500 applicants from 25 countries vying for the prestigious role.
In his first statement as CEO, Gupta emphasized the transformative phase cricket is undergoing. “These are exciting times for the sport as marquee events grow in stature, commercial avenues widen, and opportunities such as the women’s game scale in popularity,” he said. He also pointed to cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the integration of advanced technologies as catalysts for global expansion.
Gupta’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment for cricket, with the ICC aiming to capitalize on the sport’s Olympic debut and technological advancements to broaden its international appeal. His media and commercial expertise is expected to play a crucial role in shaping cricket’s future.
