England’s new white-ball opening pair of Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont continued their red-hot form, smashing consecutive centuries to power the hosts to a dominant 2-0 series lead against the West Indies in the second Women’s ODI at Grace Road, Leicester.
Fresh from their record-breaking 222-run stand in the first ODI, the duo dismantled the West Indies attack once again, adding 202 runs for the first wicket. Wicketkeeper-batter Jones, thriving in her new role as opener, hammered 129 off just 98 balls (20 fours), days after scoring her maiden ODI ton (122) in Derby. Beaumont, England’s most prolific ODI centurion, brought up her 12th hundred with a six, finishing unbeaten on 103.
Their back-to-back double-century partnerships put them in elite company alongside Australia’s Meg Lanning and Ellyse Perry as the only pairs in women’s ODI history to achieve the feat. England’s middle order capitalized on the platform, with Emma Lamb (55) and Sophia Dunkley (31 off 19) helping post a mammoth 366/6.
A depleted West Indies, missing captain Hayley Matthews and opener Qiana Joseph, crumbled under the chase. Debutant Realeanna Grimmond (53) and Jannillea Glasgow (44 off 24) showed fight, but England’s bowlers, led by Alice Capsey (3/42), sealed a comprehensive win.
The final ODI in Taunton on June 7 presents England with a chance to complete another whitewash after their 3-0 T20I series triumph.
