The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted additional rainfall in Karachi today (Sunday), following three days of intermittent moderate to light showers. While the rains provided respite from the scorching heat, they also turned fatal, claiming eight lives and injuring seven others in the city over the past 48 hours.
Rescue officials reported that a father and daughter died in Lyari when their roof collapsed, injuring five others. Separately, a child was killed in Manzoor Colony, leaving his father and brother wounded. Electrocution incidents proved equally deadly, claiming five lives across Karachi—including victims in New Karachi, Golimar, Surjani Town, and Korangi. The PMD forecasts partly cloudy weather with drizzle today, with temperatures peaking at 32°C amid 83% humidity.
The PMD warned that a second monsoon spell will hit Pakistan from July 5, exacerbating existing havoc. Nationwide, 40 people (including 18 children) have died in rain-related incidents. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 19 fatalities, mostly in Swat, while Punjab reported 15 deaths—eight of them children. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued high-risk alerts for urban flooding, flash floods, and glacial lake outbursts (GLOFs) until at least Tuesday.
Meanwhile, northern and central Balochistan have already been lashed by monsoon rains, triggering emergencies in several towns. With infrastructure vulnerabilities exposed and more rain expected, authorities urge citizens to avoid flooded areas and unstable structures. As climate extremes intensify, Pakistan’s monsoon season continues to test disaster preparedness—and resilience.
