Karachi’s ‘Wall Street’ Implements Strict No-Parking Rules to Ease Traffic

The Sindh government announced on Tuesday that it will enforce strict no-parking regulations on Karachi’s I.I. Chundrigar Road—often called the city’s “Wall Street”—to improve traffic flow and enhance road safety.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah issued the directives after a briefing on Karachi’s traffic management, according to a statement from his spokesperson, Abdur Rasheed Channa. Parking will be completely banned on I.I. Chundrigar Road from Shaheen Complex to Merewether Tower, as well as on Muhammad Bin Qasim Road up to Dr Ziauddin Road near SM Law College.

I.I. Chundrigar Road, a key financial hub housing the Pakistan Stock Exchange, major banks, and financial institutions, has long faced severe congestion due to illegal parking. Traffic police officials informed the CM that parking on pavements and main roads is now prohibited, with alternative parking available at Railway Ground.

Stricter Enforcement Against Traffic Violations

CM Shah ordered strict action against illegal parking and traffic violations, including the confiscation of vehicles with unauthorized or fancy number plates. DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah assured that police are actively enforcing these measures.

New Traffic Regulations Approved

In a related development, the Sindh government approved several amendments to the Motor Vehicles Rules, including:

  • A ban on four-seater rickshaws

  • Mandatory third-party fitness checks for all vehicles

  • A significant increase in traffic violation fines

  • A ban on tinted windows, fancy lights, and sirens (both online and in-store sales)

These changes follow a meeting chaired by Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, attended by law and transport secretaries, as well as senior police officials, to address the rising number of road accidents in the province.

The new measures aim to streamline traffic management and improve safety on Karachi’s busiest roads.
