Mehar Bar Boycott Courts, Protest Punjab CM’s Canal Project Remarks

Mehar(Report by Mujeeb Rahman Qambrani) In response to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s statement on the controversial canal project, the Mehar Baar Association has boycotted all court proceedings in support of the Sindh Bar Council’s protest call. As a result, court proceedings were suspended, and litigants were sent back.

Lawyer leaders, including Mehar Bar President Ali Asghar Patojo, General Secretary Advocate Munawar Jatoi, and Advocate Saeed Panhwar, condemned Maryam Nawaz’s statement as irresponsible and a conspiracy against smaller provinces. They emphasized that the decision to construct canals from the Indus River is unacceptable under any circumstances.

The lawyers’ protest aims to reiterate the unanimous rejection of the canal project by the people of Sindh. Although the federal government had announced the project’s cancellation following public outcry, Maryam Nawaz’s recent statements seem to revive the contentious plan, potentially creating inter-provincial discord.

The lawyers demanded that Maryam Nawaz retract her statements supporting the project and apologize to the Sindhi people for hurting their sentiments
