Military Operations Begin in Bajaur, Khyber After Failed Peace Talks

Security forces have launched operations in Bajaur and Khyber districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the collapse of negotiations between tribal elders and militants. Sources reveal that a jirga in Mamond tehsil (Bajaur) failed after insurgents rejected demands to leave the area. An estimated 300 militants are entrenched in the region, prompting mass displacement, with over 40,000 residents fleeing so far.

Officials report that more than 350 militants are active in Khyber district, with 80% across both districts believed to be Afghan nationals. The influx of foreign fighters has complicated efforts to restore stability, forcing authorities to take military action.

To secure the area, the district administration has enforced a daily 12-hour curfew (11 AM–11 PM) on key roads leading to Khar. Additionally, a three-day lockdown was imposed in 27 Mamond localities starting August 11. Residents were ordered to stay indoors, with warnings of strict action against violators.

Malakand Commissioner Abid Wazir confirmed that 107 government buildings in Khar have been prepared to house displaced families, with a tent village set up at the local sports complex. Authorities assure full support for those affected, even as the security crackdown intensifies. The situation remains volatile, with further developments expected in the coming days.
