A 59-year-old milk supplier, Basit Saeed, was killed early Friday morning when a speeding dumper truck ran over his motorcycle in Karachi’s Saudabad area. According to police, Saeed was on his daily milk delivery route when the collision occurred, leaving him with fatal injuries. He died on the spot, sparking immediate outrage among local residents.
Public Outrage and Driver’s Arrest
Angered by the incident, bystanders attacked the dumper truck and assaulted its driver before police arrived to control the situation. Saudabad SHO Ateeq Rehman confirmed that law enforcement arrested the driver and seized the vehicle, while the victim’s body was sent to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for legal procedures. The case highlights growing frustration over reckless driving by heavy vehicle operators in the city.
Alarming Rise in Karachi’s Traffic Deaths
Karachi has seen a sharp increase in fatal road accidents, particularly involving dumpers, tankers, and speeding vehicles. Hospital data reveals that in 2024 alone, nearly 500 people died and 4,879 were injured in such incidents. Just this month, four people were killed when a speeding car crashed into a wall near Mauripur, while in June, a dumper truck overturned onto a 4×4, killing a woman and a five-year-old girl.
Calls for Stricter Road Safety Measures
The repeated tragedies have intensified demands for better traffic enforcement and stricter penalties for negligent drivers. Activists argue that without harsher regulations and improved road discipline, such accidents will continue to claim innocent lives.
