On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored India’s pursuit of self-reliance with a focus on energy independence and indigenous defense capabilities during his annual Independence Day speech at the Red Fort in New Delhi. Modi highlighted the importance of reducing dependence on foreign nations, stating that true freedom is meaningless without self-sufficiency. His speech came at a time when India faces mounting pressure from the United States, which has threatened to double import tariffs if India does not halt its purchases of Russian oil—a vital revenue stream for Moscow during its military campaign in Ukraine.
Modi acknowledged that India still depends on some countries to meet its energy needs but stressed that achieving full energy independence is essential for building a truly self-reliant nation. He called on Indian scientists and engineers to accelerate the development of critical sectors such as fighter jet engines, semiconductor chips, and military hardware. Modi announced that India aims to have domestically-produced semiconductor chips by the end of the year and is also pursuing ambitious projects including the construction of a space station and the establishment of a defense shield within the next decade.
Though Modi did not explicitly mention former US President Donald Trump, he made clear that India will stand firm “like a wall” against any policies that harm its farmers and economic interests. Agriculture remains a critical sector employing millions and has frequently been a contentious issue in trade negotiations between India and the US.
Amid global economic uncertainties and rising protectionism, Modi encouraged the nation to focus on its strengths rather than dwell on crises. His message called for resilience and unity as India navigates complex international pressures while striving to become a developed, self-sufficient country prepared to defend its interests resolutely.
