Monsoon Rains Claim Five Lives in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Including Four Children

Heavy monsoon rains in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have resulted in the deaths of five people over the past 24 hours, four of whom were children, according to a report from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). Another five individuals were injured as the province, still reeling from catastrophic floods earlier this month that killed 406 people, continues to be lashed by severe weather.

The casualties occurred in separate incidents across the province. In Peshawar, two children died—one swept away by a flash flood and a three-month-old infant killed in a roof collapse. In upper South Waziristan, a roof collapse claimed the lives of three members of the same family, including two children and a woman. The rains have also damaged six houses, three of which were completely destroyed.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported significant rainfall, with Cherat receiving 165mm and the provincial capital Peshawar receiving 41mm in the last day. This heavy rain has swelled local nullahs, submerging low-lying areas in several towns. The PDMA has directed district administrations to intensify relief efforts and has urged citizens to contact its emergency helpline, 1700, for assistance and updates.

This latest tragedy adds to the mounting national toll from this year’s monsoon season. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), at least 853 people have died and over 1,000 have been injured in rain-related incidents and flash floods since the monsoon began on June 25. The season continues to trigger devastating floods, landslides, and widespread displacement across the country.
