Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump centered on securing the release of hostages held in Gaza and Israel’s commitment to dismantling Hamas’ military and governance capabilities. In a post on X, Netanyahu highlighted their discussion on the aftermath of recent joint U.S.-Israel strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities, calling it a “great victory.” The talks come amid ongoing efforts to broker a ceasefire after nearly two years of conflict.
Ceasefire Negotiations Show Progress
Netanyahu, on his third U.S. visit since Trump took office, stated that while Israel’s military operations in Gaza are not yet complete, negotiators are actively working toward a truce. U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff indicated that significant progress had been made, with major disagreements between Israel and Hamas reduced from four to just one. He expressed optimism about securing a temporary 60-day ceasefire, including the release of ten living hostages and nine deceased individuals.
Qatari Mediation and White House Talks
A Qatari delegation reportedly held discussions with senior White House officials before Netanyahu’s arrival, according to Axios. Qatar has been facilitating indirect talks between Israel and Hamas, but the White House has not yet commented on the details. Netanyahu also met with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, reinforcing bipartisan support for Israel’s security objectives.
Netanyahu’s Firm Stance on Hamas
Despite diplomatic efforts, Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s determination to neutralize Hamas, stating that the campaign in Gaza is far from over. However, he acknowledged the importance of negotiations, signaling a dual approach of military pressure and diplomatic engagement. With Netanyahu scheduled to meet Senate leaders next, the U.S. and Israel appear aligned on both short-term ceasefire prospects and long-term strategic goals in the region.
