OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, is scouting for local partners to establish a massive data center in India with a capacity of at least 1 gigawatt, according to a Bloomberg News report. The plan represents a significant step forward in the company’s Stargate-branded artificial intelligence infrastructure push in Asia. Reuters could not immediately verify the report, and OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment made outside of regular business hours.
The move aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategy to expand its presence in India, which is its second-largest market by user base. The Microsoft-backed company has already formally registered as a legal entity in the country and has begun building a local team. In August, it announced plans to open its first India office in New Delhi later this year.
According to the Bloomberg report, the location and timeline for the proposed data center project remain uncertain. However, it noted that CEO Sam Altman may announce the facility during a planned visit to the country in September. The initiative is part of a much larger, global AI infrastructure effort.
The Stargate project was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump in January as a private sector investment of up to $500 billion for AI infrastructure, funded by a consortium that includes SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle. The planned data center in India would be a key component of this ambitious, multi-company initiative to build out the computational backbone required for advanced artificial intelligence.
