Pakistan Braces for New Monsoon Onslaught as Flood Threats Loom

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued warnings of another intense rain spell set to lash the country from August 4-7, raising concerns about worsening floods in already vulnerable regions. The forecast predicts strengthening monsoon currents and a westerly wave that could trigger heavy downpours, particularly in northern and central Pakistan.

Regional Breakdown of Expected Impacts:

  • Kashmir & Gilgit-Baltistan: Scattered heavy rains may cause flash floods and landslides in Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Skardu, and Gilgit.

  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: High-risk districts like Swat, Mansehra, and Dera Ismail Khan face threats of urban flooding and infrastructure damage.

  • Punjab/Islamabad: Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Murree could experience urban flooding, while southern Punjab may see disruptions by August 6.

  • Sindh/Balochistan: Mostly hot and humid, with isolated showers in coastal Sindh and parts of Balochistan.

Authorities on High Alert
The PMD has warned of potential flash floods in hill torrents and damage to vulnerable structures. The NDMA and provincial disaster agencies remain mobilized, urging citizens to avoid non-essential travel to high-risk zones and monitor updates via the Pak Weather app.

This alert follows earlier monsoon spells that have already caused fatalities and infrastructure losses, compounding challenges for flood response systems.
