Pakistan Leads Condemnation of Israeli Strikes at UN Emergency Session

Pakistan has warned that Israel’s military strikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites pose a “serious threat to regional and global security”, during an urgent UN Security Council meeting convened on Friday. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, condemned the attacks as “unjustified and illegitimate”, reaffirming Islamabad’s firm support for Iran. The session, requested by Iran and backed by Pakistan, China, and Russia, highlighted growing international alarm over the escalating crisis.

UN officials echoed concerns, with Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo urging “maximum restraint” to avoid a wider conflict. She noted the timing was especially critical, as the strikes disrupted planned US-Iran nuclear talks in Oman—now reportedly canceled. “Dialogue, not escalation, is the only path forward,” she stressed, warning of catastrophic consequences if tensions spiral further.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also sounded the alarm, with Director General Rafael Grossi emphasizing that nuclear facilities must never be targeted. He confirmed ongoing assessments of safety risks and offered IAEA’s neutral platform to de-escalate tensions. “Facts, not rhetoric, must guide solutions,” he said, pledging support for diplomatic efforts.

As the Security Council deliberates next steps, Pakistan and other nations are pushing for immediate de-escalation through multilateral dialogue. With fears of a broader regional war mounting, the world watches to see whether diplomacy can prevail—or if the Middle East is headed toward an even deeper crisis.
