Information Minister Attaullah Tarar reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering support for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, assuring that the government is extending full diplomatic and legal assistance. Speaking to journalists in Islamabad, Tarar addressed the controversy surrounding Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar’s recent comments, stating they were taken out of context. He emphasized that Dar had already provided clarification and accused critics of misrepresenting the matter.
Tarar highlighted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s personal engagement in the matter, including a meeting with Dr. Fouzia Siddiqui, Aafia’s sister. He noted that a dedicated committee had been formed to advance the case, stressing that no previous government had shown such sustained efforts. “This administration is fully committed to pursuing justice for Dr. Aafia,” he asserted.
During his visit to the US, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar spoke at the Atlantic Council, where he responded to questions about Imran Khan’s legal proceedings, stating that Pakistan ensures a fair judicial process. Drawing a parallel, he referenced Dr. Aafia’s long detention in the US, arguing that if her imprisonment is deemed a legal outcome, the same standard should apply universally.
The information minister also denied claims that Ishaq Dar was part of the Sugar Advisory Board, labeling them as false. Additionally, he defended Pakistan’s cryptocurrency regulations, stating that the country has established a clear legal framework. He criticized opponents, including former finance minister Miftah Ismail, for echoing hostile narratives similar to India’s stance on crypto. Tarar concluded by saying critics are uneasy with Pakistan’s economic progress, suggesting their objections stem from political motives.
