Pakistan Unveils Ambitious EV Scheme: 100,000 E-Bikes, 300,000 E-Loaders on Subsidized Loans

The federal government has announced a major electric vehicle (EV) initiative, aiming to distribute over 100,000 electric bikes and 300,000 electric loaders to the public through subsidized rates and easy loans. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, chairing a high-level meeting, emphasized that the scheme will reduce Pakistan’s fuel import dependency, save foreign exchange, curb pollution, and support local manufacturing. He directed officials to prepare a comprehensive plan ensuring affordability and accessibility nationwide.

Incentives for Students, Unemployed & Women

As part of the programme, top-performing students across all educational boards will receive free electric bikes, while unemployed individuals will be prioritized for e-rickshaws and loaders to promote self-employment. The government has allocated a 25% quota for women, with an increased 10% share for Balochistan to ensure regional equity. PM Shehbaz also stressed third-party oversight to guarantee transparency in distribution, urging priority for low-income groups.

Boosting Local Industry & Jobs

The meeting revealed that four new battery manufacturing plants are being established in Pakistan due to the EV push, creating business and employment opportunities. Authorities confirmed that low-cost financing for e-bikes, rickshaws, and loaders is already underway. PM Shehbaz mandated strict quality checks on all vehicles and ordered a public awareness campaign to educate citizens on the benefits.

Challenges & Next Steps

While the plan promises a greener, more self-reliant Pakistan, its success hinges on timely execution and corruption-free implementation. With federal ministers and senior officials overseeing the project, the government is pushing for rapid rollout. Will this initiative truly transform Pakistan’s transport sector, or will bureaucratic hurdles slow progress? The coming months will be critical.
