Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered federal ministers to supervise relief operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after catastrophic flash floods killed 314 people and left 156 injured. The provincial government declared an emergency as torrential rains wreaked havoc across Buner, Swat, Shangla, and Mansehra, destroying homes, displacing families, and leaving many feared trapped under debris. The PM has directed the NDMA to accelerate rescue efforts, with additional relief supplies, including food, tents, and medicines, being rushed to affected areas.
Federal ministers have been assigned to oversee relief activities in the worst-hit districts. Amir Muqam will manage Shangla and Buner, Awais Leghari will assist in Buner, and Sardar Yousaf will lead operations in Mansehra. Meanwhile, Special Assistant Mubarak Zeb will coordinate relief distribution in Bajaur. Rescue teams face immense challenges due to blocked roads, power outages, and disrupted communication networks. Authorities warn that the death toll may rise as dozens remain missing.
Buner district alone accounts for 209 deaths, followed by Shangla (36), Mansehra (24), and Bajaur (21). Over 150 houses and 57 schools have been damaged, while rescue teams struggle to reach isolated areas. In Swat, two women and several students were rescued, but many remain buried under rubble. KP Rescue 1122 reported that 2,000 workers are deployed across nine districts, though continuous rain and landslides are hampering progress.
Survivors describe scenes of devastation, with mud-covered homes, stranded vehicles, and destroyed infrastructure. KP PDMA officials fear many victims may have been swept away by floodwaters or trapped under collapsed buildings. With no electricity or mobile signals in Buner, rescue efforts are further complicated. As the province battles one of its worst disasters, the government urges nationwide support for relief operations.
