Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, addressing the 25th Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tianjin, China, emphasized the menace of state-sponsored terrorism while calling for respect for sovereignty, enhanced regional dialogue, and collective counterterrorism efforts. Highlighting the significance of Tianjin as a symbol of China’s values and cultural bridge, the premier reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to fostering regional peace, connectivity, and cooperation through the SCO platform.
During his six-day visit, including meetings with China’s President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, PM Shehbaz emphasized Pakistan’s adherence to multilateralism and diplomacy over confrontation. He stressed the need for all SCO members to uphold bilateral and international agreements, especially regarding uninterrupted access to water resources, which are critical for regional stability. The prime minister also called for a comprehensive dialogue to resolve longstanding South Asian issues, highlighting Afghanistan’s stability as crucial for the entire region.
Highlighting Pakistan’s enduring sacrifices in the fight against terrorism – over 90,000 lives lost – PM Shehbaz condemned terrorism in all forms, specifically condemning state-backed terrorism and calling for accountability for those responsible for recent attacks in Pakistan. He strongly criticized Israel’s ongoing actions in Gaza and aggression against Iran, reiterating Pakistan’s support for a two-state solution in accordance with UN resolutions.
On economic cooperation, the prime minister praised China’s leadership under President Xi Jinping and described the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as a flagship project exemplifying mutual cooperation and regional development. Expressing gratitude for China’s hospitality, he underscored CPEC’s role in boosting connectivity and economic integration, reflecting Pakistan’s resolve to contribute to regional prosperity and peace.
