Central Information Secretary of the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP), Shazia Marri, has stated that while natural disasters like heavy rains cannot be prevented, their impact can be effectively managed through timely preparation and proper planning. Commenting on the recent monsoon rains that lashed Karachi and Sindh, Marri argued that collective efforts, not political rhetoric, are essential to address the serious impacts of climate change.
Marri defended her party’s governance, reminding that the people elected the PPP to serve Sindh and Karachi, and it has consistently stood with them in difficult times. She detailed the preparatory measures taken, noting that sewerage cleaning and repair work had commenced months before the monsoon season, which she credited for averting a far worse crisis. She highlighted the hands-on approach of leadership, stating that President Asif Ali Zardari and Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari remained in constant contact with the administration, while Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah personally monitored drainage operations. She specifically praised Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab for working “tirelessly day and night” during the emergency.
Acknowledging citizen hardships, Marri assured that the provincial government is providing all possible assistance. She took aim at opposition parties, accusing them of engaging in mere criticism and issuing statements despite being “rejected by the people,” instead of contributing to solutions. She contended that even developed cities globally struggle with similar rainfall, but in Karachi, water was drained “almost immediately after the rain stopped.” Concluding her remarks, Marri reaffirmed her party’s commitment to continue serving the people of Sindh and Karachi with full dedication.
