The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned of potential flooding in the Sutlej and Chenab rivers due to heavy rains in northern Pakistan and the expected release of water from Indian dams. A PDMA spokesperson stated that Indian reservoirs—Bhakra, Pong, and Thein—are at 61%, 76%, and 64% capacity, respectively, increasing the likelihood of water discharge into the Sutlej within two days.
PDMA Director General confirmed that river and dam levels are being closely monitored, with medium to high-level flooding anticipated in the Chenab. The Sutlej River’s water flow may also surge, posing risks to nearby areas. The warning comes as Punjab prepares for a seventh monsoon spell starting August 13, which could further elevate water levels in the Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab, and Jhelum rivers.
Commissioners, deputy commissioners, and disaster response teams have been instructed to remain vigilant. The PDMA’s flood advisory urges immediate preparedness to mitigate potential damage. This follows widespread destruction from recent monsoon rains, including urban flooding, landslides, and over 300 fatalities across Pakistan.
Gilgit-Baltistan, a popular tourist destination, has suffered severe flash floods and landslides. Last month, Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan reported at least 10 deaths and multiple injuries due to torrential rains. With another monsoon wave approaching, authorities are emphasizing emergency measures to protect lives and infrastructure.
