Punjab on High Alert as Rivers Swell to Critical Levels

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Punjab has confirmed that a high flood situation is ongoing across several major rivers, posing a significant threat to nearby areas. Substantial water inflows have been recorded at all major headworks throughout the province, prompting authorities to remain on high alert and issue warnings to communities residing along riverbanks.

The River Chenab is experiencing exceptionally high volumes, with alarming readings at multiple points. The flow has surged to 554,000 cusecs at Chiniot Bridge, marking it as a critical point. Significant levels were also recorded at Qadirabad Headworks (385,000 cusecs), Khanki Headworks (248,000 cusecs), Trimmu Headworks (239,000 cusecs), and Marala Headworks (117,000 cusecs).

The River Sutlej is also presenting a major concern, with a powerful discharge of 319,000 cusecs at Ganda Singh Wala. Further downriver, the Panjnad Headworks is receiving an inflow of 224,000 cusecs, while Islam Headworks has recorded a flow of 102,000 cusecs. Simultaneously, the River Ravi is running high, with Balloki Headworks at 138,000 cusecs, Ravi Siphon at 110,000 cusecs, Shahdara at 108,000 cusecs, and Jassar at 80,000 cusecs.

The PDMA and local emergency services are closely monitoring the evolving situation. These water levels indicate a severe flood risk, and evacuations in vulnerable districts are likely underway. The public, especially in at-risk regions, is advised to adhere strictly to all official directives and move to higher ground as instructed.
